Quick Hit: First Democrat/MS-13 Ad already out
Defending MS-13 gang unlikely to translate well for Democrats at the ballot box
Over the past week, I've said Sen. Chris Van Hollen's (D-MD) trip to visit MS-13 gang member Kilmar Garcia in El Salvador would become a political ad down the road.
Well, that’s happened faster than expected.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee dropped this ad late yesterday.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) said it will pay for Democrats to go there and see Garcia - but there's a catch.
“The NRCC is offering to pick up the tab for any House Democrat eager to hang out with their new poster child in El Salvador, a confirmed illegal immigrant, MS-13 gang member, and alleged domestic abuser," the NRCC said in a statement onTuesday. "We just have one condition: Livestream the whole thing. Snap plenty of selfies with your MS-13 buddies — the same violent criminals you’re trying to reimport into American neighborhoods to rape, kill, and terrorize law-abiding citizens."
“If out of touch House Democrats are so desperate to cozy up to violent gang members, the least they can do is let Americans watch the show," said NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella. "We’ll pay for the plane tickets, they just can’t forget to smile for the camera while they sell out their constituents."
The ad and the NRCC statement were well timed, with four House Democrats arriving in El Salvador the same day. None of them are from Maryland, where Garcia had been living when he was deported.
Rep. Max Frost (FL) announced he had landed in El Salvador along with Reps. Robert Garcia (CA), Yassami Ansari (AZ) and Maxine Dexter (OR).
Frost also made untrue claims in his post as well as implying anyone could be deported at any time.
"Trump is illegally arresting, jailing, & deporting people with no due process. We must hold the Administration accountable for these illegal acts and demand Kilmar’s release," Frost wrote on X. "Today it’s him, tomorrow it could be anyone else."
House Republicans have piled on, dubbing the Democrats who have gone to Garcia’s aid in El Salvador the “MS-13 Caucus.”
