Move over "Maryland man," here comes "Durham man."
Victor Alfonso Elvira-Tapia has committed dozens of serious crimes spanning over five NC counties. And an immigration hold was issued last year.
We've heard a lot lately about the "Maryland Man" deported to El Salavador.
This week, we're hearing about the "Durham man."
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Multiple felonies across multiple counties is what a Durham man is currently facing.
29-year-old Victor Alfonso Elvira-Tapia was taken into custody on Monday by State Highway Patrol, court documents show. Elvira-Tapia is accused of trying to flee officers in a stolen black Ford F-150 during a high-speed chase along I-885.
Arrest warrants say that Elvira-Tapia was driving 100 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone and tried to ram over a trooper’s patrol car.
The article goes on to describe Elvira-Tapia's crime spree across Durham, Granville, Orange, and Wake Counties.
"Between the four counties, Elvira-Tapia faces 19 pending charges in total, while accruing $165,000 worth of bonds," WNCN reported. "Records show he spent nearly a year in jail in 2016 and has been arrested over a dozen times since 2011."
More To The Story
None of the articles I've seen on this "Durham man's" arrest so far note he was also arrested in Forsyth County in 2024 on stolen vehicle and drug charges.
Oh, and Elvia-Tapia also was issued an immigration detainer hold…which was apparently not honored seeing as how he’s free and committing crimes in other counties.
Elvira-Tapia's incarceration record shows the Forsyth charges but also felony larceny charges in Johnston County, for which he was given probation.
Court records show Elvira-Tapia has had his release order modified several times, with the most recent filing in his vehicle larceny case stating that he's failed to appear in court multiple times.
Anyone can look up Elvira-Tapia's history in the eCourts system, but here are the pending cases:
Case No. 24CR411104-310 - Pending, Durham
Case No. 25CR262118-380 - Pending, Granville
Case No. 25CR261394-670 - Pending, Orange
Case No. 25CR258076-910 - Pending, Wake
