The Major Cities Chiefs Association report on violent crime is out.
The report, which looks at rape, homicide, robbery and aggravated assault, shows most of these crimes decreasing in the first six months of 2024 over the same time frame in 2023.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland touted it as a win.
“This data offers yet another indicator of a substantial reduction in violent crime in major cities across the country. In nearly 70 major cities across the country, violent crime has continued to drop during the first six months of this year compared to the same time period last year, including a 17% decrease in homicides," said Garland.
Let's talk about the spin here.
One would think New York City would make the major cities list, yet it is absent from the report. Only data from the New York City area included Suffolk County, which spans two thirds of Long Island.
New York City's overall data was also missing from the FBI's quarterly crime data report, which Garland also praised.
In fact, a number of the "70 major cities," are among those missing from the FBI's report. For example, cities like Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Nashville.
More To The Story
Charlotte and Raleigh are included in the MCC report.
Here’s the breakout for Charlotte and Raleigh. Red numbers indicate an increase in 2024 over 2023 in each of the crime categories. The second set of numbers is the percentage increase between 2023 and 2024 for each category
As one can easily see, Raleigh’s homicide rate spiked 78% and Charlotte’s 36%. Rapes are up in Raleigh 17% as well.
These number likely will show up in the North Carolina gubernatorial race between Lt. Governor Mark Robinson and Attorney General Josh Stein, with the Robinson campaign hitting Stein on his law enforcement track record.
