Quick Hit - Senate passes its Laken Riley Act
Both chambers of Congress have passed such a measure
The U.S. Senate has passed S.5: The Laken Riley Act by a vote of 64 - 35.
The measure passed with some Democrat support; Gallego (D-AZ), Kelly (D-AZ), Ossoff (D-GA), Peters (D-MI), Rosen (D-NV), Slotkin (D-MI), Warner (D-VA), and Warnock (D-GA).
The remaining 33 Democrats and two Independents voted against it. North Carolina Sens. Thom Tillis and Ted Budd voted to pass it.
“Passage of the Laken Riley Act is a victory for law and order and safety. What happened to Laken Riley should never happen to any American citizen," said Budd in a statement. I am proud to have led this legislation with Senators Britt, Fetterman, and Majority Leader Thune and look forward to President Trump signing it into law.
S.5's next stop is the House, which has its own version that was passed and sent to the Senate. It's likely the two bills will be merged at some point before landing on President Trump's desk.
