MTS Quick Hit: MS-13 gang member with Interpol Red Notice caught in Durham
How and when did this person enter the country and end up in Durham?
An MS-13 gang member with an Interpol Red Notice on them was apprehended by ICE in Durham earlier this month.
On Dec. 6, ICE issued a press release on its website about the arrest of an MS-13 gang member Rene Arturo Canas-Rivas by its fugitive and removal team in Raleigh. This person has an Interpol Red Notice on them.
Here's the meat of the ICE press release:
ERO Raleigh arrests MS-13 member
DURHAM, N.C. – Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Raleigh Fugitive Operations Team arrested 39-year-old Rene Arturo Canas-Rivas, a citizen and national of El Salvador, on Nov. 30.Canas has an Interpol Red Notice and is wanted in El Salvador for murder and terrorist organization affiliations. Canas is a documented member of the MS-13 transnational criminal organization.
ERO became aware of Canas after receiving the Red Notice and used their resources to quickly locate him.
“Violent criminals who commit crimes in the United States or abroad, have no safe haven within our communities,” said Atlanta Field Office Director Ladeon E. Francis. “ERO Atlanta officers are always ready to respond quickly and effectively to apprehend noncitizens that are threats to the community, like this subject.”
Canas was taken into custody outside of his residence in Durham, North Carolina without incident. He is in ICE custody.
An ICE custody search shows he's currently in the Stewart Detention Center located in Lumpkin, Georgia.
Nowhere in the release or any news report does it mention when or how this guy got into the country in the first place or how he ended up in Durham, for that matter.
There is no mention of how ICE came to know he was in Durham either, however, I did find an arrest for "Rene Cana Rivas" in Alamance County on Nov. 20. Maybe that arrest hit ICE’s system and directed their search in North Carolina?
From the booking photo, it looks like it could be the same guy with a little more weight and minus the facial hair.
Also, the booking record says he's 40 and the ICE press release says he's 39. Maybe someone did the birthday math wrong. There is zero information about this arrest on the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office website.
