Masks return amid CDC director vow of "Repairing Trust"
Also, new study shows masks can cause cancer
After new CDC Director Mandy Cohen vowed she would be “repairing trust” in her agency, masks have returned to a handful of school districts around the country as well as being worn by Cohen herself (sometimes) and President Joe Biden in the White House (again, sometimes).
On Sept. 7, Cohen published four photos from meetings with U.S. Senators in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which she is masked in two of them. Apparently, masks only apply when meeting with certain senators.
The day before Cohen’s social media post, Biden walked into a medal ceremony holding a mask but not wearing it. When he got to the podium, he said, "They keep telling me...I gotta keep wearing it [holding up a mask], but don't tell them I didn't have it on when I walked in."
The non-masking incident by Biden came just days after it was revealed on Sept. 5 by the White House press secretary that the vaccinated and boosted First Lady had tested positive for COVID and that the president would be masking again.
So what’s the message here? Masks for all of the time, some of the time, or just when one feels like it? All of the above?
This masking or not masking circus also lands near the two year anniversary of Biden telling the nation people were allowed to go maskless but only if you were “fully vaccinated.”
Just a week or so prior to Cohen whipping out the masks again, comedian Russell Brand dropped a video on the new CDC director and her quest to restore trust.
In his video, Brand discusses in an interview Cohen was “laughing, scoffing, and joking” about how she wasn’t really “following the science” but instead would call up officials and friends in other states to see how they were locking things down. He also predicts the return of bad public policy.
There’s also a new study out on masks that essentially says they can give you cancer.
More To The Story
Published in April, researchers at Jeonbuk National University in South Korea found that disposable masks and medical-grade N95 masks release eight times the recommended safety limit for what the study called “toxic volatile organic compounds” (TVOCs).
TVOCs can cause cancer and are also released by items such as paint, some cleaning products, disinfectants, pesticides, tobacco smoke, and caulk.
The American Lung Association says breathing TVOCs “can irritate the eyes, nose and throat.” They can also cause “difficulty breathing and nausea, and can damage the central nervous system and other organs.”
The study said TVOC levels were 14 times lower in cloth masks than N95’s and other medical-grade masks. Right now, the public is being pushed toward N95 masks.
This study on TVOCs in masks was apparently quietly shared by the National Institutes of Health, which was headed up by the now-famous Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Another study published back in February that is making the rounds again shows masks as ineffective in preventing COVID-19 transmission.
Fauci recently ended up in the hot seat on CNN when asked about that study.
While slightly admitting studies are showing masks don’t work, he tried to defend the practice by shifting from the populace at large needing to wear a mask to focusing on individual wearers.
“When you’re talking about the effect on the epidemic or the pandemic as a whole, the data are less strong,” Fauci told the CNN host. “But there are other studies, Michael, that show at an individual level… for individuals, they might be protective.”
Fauci also tried to impress upon the host that, currently, “We’re not talking about forcing anybody to do anything.”
"The CDC does not mandate anything," Fauci also said with a straight face.
He went on to say that if a Covid surge comes, "I hope they would abide by the recommendation and take into account the risks to themselves and to their families. We are not talking about forcing anybody to do anything."
Sen. Rand Paul, Fauci’s biggest critic, wasn’t having any of it.
“Fauci admits that masks don’t work for the public at large but still absurdly claims masks work on an individual basis. More subterfuge,” Paul wrote in a post on X that included a clip from the CNN segment.
Cohen has not been asked about Fauci’s recent assertion, however, in the past, she’s proven herself a fan.
